Artificial intelligence (AI), ubiquitous sensing technologies, and digital information ecosystems are fundamentally transforming how humans and intelligent systems perceive, reason about, and interact with the world. Together, humans and AI continuously generate massive streams of multimodal information that reflect the evolving state of physical and social environments. Harnessing these complementary sources of intelligence presents one of the defining scientific challenges of the AI era.
Our research addresses this challenge through Social Sensing & Intelligence (SSI) , which we define as the science of collective intelligence in human-AI ecosystems. SSI investigates how human and artificial intelligence can be integrated to perceive, reason about, and understand complex systems, leveraging their complementary strengths to generate collective intelligence that exceeds the capabilities of either alone. To advance this vision, we develop interdisciplinary theories, computational methods, and intelligent systems that transform heterogeneous human- and machine-generated data into reliable knowledge and actionable intelligence. Our research spans social sensing, multimodal intelligence, human-AI collaboration, collective intelligence, intelligent information systems, and AI-enabled decision support.
Our long-term vision is to establish Social Sensing & Intelligence as a foundational scientific paradigm for human-AI ecosystems, empowering people and intelligent systems to collaboratively understand complex environments and make better decisions for science and society.
